Indian Food Culture


India has wide range of food habits. Different   types of food is seen in different regions of India. Their are total 29 states in India so their food culture also varies with these regions. We will know about food cultures of some major states of India. Other countries neaibouring to India also have similar food culture.

Food culture of various states of India

 1.Andhra Pradesh
    The folks in this region often include rice as staple food with lentils like pappu ,spicy vegetables and curry in their daily diet. They include dahi (yoghurt) to  their daily meal. Their breakfast usually includes dosa, pesarattu (mung bean dosa), idli-sambhar and vada-samabhar.
     They make pickles of mango, tomato, etc.
 
  2.Andaman and Nicobar islands
      These folks usually feed on seafood as they are surrounded by the ocean which is rich in seafood. They include food like roots , fruits, meat and fish.
  
3.Arunachal Pradesh
  Fish, meat and leafy vegetables are the part of a diet of people in Arunachal Pradesh. Here, lettuce is the most common vegetable that is eaten. Tribal people eat meat  like fish, chicken, mutton and beef. Apong or rice beer is  a refreshing drink.

4.Assam
  Assam people have variety of food culture. They include herb, fruits and vegetables in their daily diet. Variety of rices are included in their diet. Non-vegetarian items like fish, chicken, goat, duck, pork, snail, silkworm are eaten. Rice wine or rice beer is served before the meal.
  
5. West Bengal

  In Bengal, fish, meat, vegetables, lentils and rice is part of daily food culture. Deep fried bread luchi is popular food item. Moreover, Sweetwater fish is popular in many people. Rossogulla and shondesh are most popular sweets in Bengal.
  
6.Bihar
  Litti chokha, a baked salted wheat flour cake  and some spices like baigan bharata ( made up of roasted brinjal). Saalan is the popular meat dish in Bihar. Dalpuri is popular dish which is made up of salted bread filled with crushed, fried gram pulses. Malpua, balushahi are the popular dishes of Bihar. Palak paneer is famous dish of Bihar.

7.Gujrat
  The Gujarati diet consists of roti, daal or kadhi, sabji papad, chhanch. Handva is the Gujarati dish which is sweet as well as salty. Gujarati snacks like khaman dhokla, khakhra,  bhakharwadi, jalebi and phaphda are very popular among the people.

8.Maharashtra

  In Maharashtra, people eat bhakri made up of jowar, bajara and chapati made up of wheat along with spices of vegetables, varan or aamti. They include rice in their diet which they serve with varan ,aamti or spices.
  Pav bhaji, wada pav, batata wada, puran poli, ukdiche modak are the popular dishes. They also eat sweet like shrikhand. Kande pohe and tarri poha are the very famous breakfast dishes in Maharashtra.
  Moreover Kolhapuri sukka mutton is famous nonveg dish.

9.Panjab

  Here, common dishes are roti, dal, chutney, dahi and salad. Makke di roti, sarason da saag, dal makhani. Tandoori chicken is the famous nonveg dish. Lassi, paneer, milk are also part of their diet. Kheer, gajar ka halwa, gulab jamun, jalebi are the famous sweet dishes of Panjab.

10.Rajasthan
  Major dishes of Rajasthani food are dal-batti, choorma, ghevar, boondi, raabdi and kadhi. Mirchi bhaja, bikaneri bhujia, pyaaj kachori, dal kachori are popular snacks of Rajasthan.
  Dal-batti and choorma is the speciality of Rajasthan. Boondi ke laddoo is the famous sweet.

11.Tamil nadu
  They mainly make the food items made up of rice. Idli, dosa, uttappam, pongal and biryani are eaten with sambar and chutney. Fish and seafood is also popular. Chicken and goat meat is also eaten. Coffee is their favourite drink. Rava idli, dosa, upma and vada are the breakfast items.

12.Telangana

  Mainly Hyderabadi biryani is famous dish of Telangana. Rice is a staple food. Non-vegetarian food items are kheema, haleem. Various soups and broths are consumed.

This is the food culture of various states of India.

Eating habits of people
 
People have habits of eating paan, elaichi, supari after their meal. People also have various food items for fast. It includes food items made up of sabudana, peanuts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sago, etc.

  Here, people consume  their meal with their right hand. For few items they may use spoons.
